Vitreous Detachment

The vitreous is a transparent gel inside the eye that consists of collagen, proteins, hyaluronic acid and mainly water. Over the years, it degenerates and liquefies, resulting in its detachment from the retina through physiological processes. This separation of the vitreous – retina can cause the patient to experience photopsies (flashes) and myopsies (flies).
The patient must be examined immediately with funduscopy because in 10% of vitreous detachments, a tear in the retina may be found, which requires immediate treatment with Argon laser photocoagulation.
