Blepharitis
This is an inflammation of the eyelids, where the eyes appear red and irritated and very often itchy.
It is classified into anterior and posterior depending on its location. The meibomian glands of the eyelids are often affected, where due to the oiliness of the skin, sebum cannot be drained from the pores of the glands, resulting in oily and swollen eyelids. In some patients, there is also a mixed type of blepharitis where both anterior and posterior blepharitis coexist.
Its treatment is based on heat (warm compresses with water, massage) and eyelid hygiene (foam or special wipes). In more severe forms, topical antibiotic eye drops or oral doxycycline can be used.
